Severe cyclonic storm ‘Nisarga’ moved north eastward in Maharashtra as it weakened after landfall, IMD said in its latest update.

The storm made landfall south of Alibag between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph, the Met department said. It lay centred over coastal Maharashtra east-southeast of Alibag, 75 km southeast of Mumbai and 65 km west of Pune as of 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cyclone Nisarga is the second cyclone over North Indian Ocean this season after Amphan.

Cyclone Nisarga Moving North Eastward

The severe cyclonic storm Nisarga moved with a speed of 24 kmph over the past six hours and weakened into a cyclonic storm, the Indian Meteorological Department said on Twitter.

Tidal Surge Along The Coast

Estimated tidal wave along and off Raigad, Mumbai and Thane districts at the time of landfall was about 1 to 2 metres, IMD said in its 3:20 p.m bulletin.

“It is decreasing gradually with the inland movement of the cyclone,” the Met Department said. “The storm surge of 0.5 metre above astronomical tide is likely to continue along and off Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts during next three hours.”

Cyclonic Storm Crosses Maharashtra Coast

Severe cyclonic storm 'Nisarga’ crossed the Maharashtra coast between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph.

Wind Forecast For Coastal Maharashtra And Gujarat

India Meteorological Department warns of strong winds along and off coastal Maharashtra and Gujarat during the next three hours, that will gradually decrease thereafter.

  • 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph along Raigad and adjoining areas of Mumbai and Thane
  • 60-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph likely along Ratnagiri,, Sindhudurg, remaining areas of Thane and Palghar districts
  • 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph along Valsad and Navsari districts of Gujarat

Over 50,000 Evacuated In Gujarat, Daman

Nearly 50,000 people living in coastal areas of south Gujarat and some 4,000 residents of the neighbouring Union Territory of Daman have so far been shifted to safer places, officials said on Wednesday.

Police have been deployed on all the beaches in Gujarat's coastal belt and people have been asked to remain indoors, they said.

"As many as 50,000 living near the coastline in South Gujarat have already been shifted to safer places while work is in progress to evacuate more people," Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue, Pankaj Kumar said.

While the cyclone is expected to cross the state coast in the afternoon, light rain started in most parts of Valsad and Navsari districts since morning.

As a precautionary measure, about 236 large hoardings and 120 high mast lights have been removed from Surat, Valsad and other towns of coastal region, Kumar said. “Around 250 ambulances and 170 emergency medical teams have been kept on stand-by in the South Gujarat region to address any eventuality.”

Besides, some 4,000 people living close to the sea shore in the adjoining Union Territory of Daman have also been shifted to safer places," another official said.

All Fishing Boats Return To Shore Ahead Of Cyclone Nisarga

All fishing boats which were out in the sea off Palghar coast have returned ahead of the cyclone 'Nisarga', an official said.

As many as 577 fishing boats from Palghar had earlier gone out to the sea and 564 were back by Monday evening. Later, help was sought from the Coast Guard, Navy and the fisheries department and the remaining 13 boats also returned to the shore late Tuesday evening, district disaster control chief Vivekanand Kadam said.

More than 15,000 people residing in low lying areas and kutcha houses near the coast in Dahanu, Palghar, Vasai and Talasari tehsils of Palghar were evacuated and shifted to safer places, he said.

Prohibitory orders have already been imposed in Palghar and neighbouring Thane district till Thursday, and people, including fishermen, have been asked not to venture into the sea.

Trains Rescheduled, Diverted From Mumbai

The Central Railway has resheduled, diverted and regulated some trains from Mumbai in view of the cyclonic storm 'Nisarga'.

Five special trains departing from Mumbai have been rescheduled and three special trains will be either diverted or regulated enroute, the Central Railway said in a release.

  • LTT-Gorakhpur Special will depart at 8 p.m. instead of 11:10 a.m.
  • LTT-Thiruvananthapuram Special will depart at 6 p.m. instead of 11:40 a.m.
  • LTT-Darbhanga Special will depart at 8:30 p.m. instead of 12:15 p.m.
  • LTT-Varanasi Special will depart at 9 p.m. instead of 12:40 p.m.
  • CSMT-Bhubaneswar Special will depart at 8 p.m. instead of 3:05 p.m.
  • Patna-LTT Special scheduled to arrive at 11:30 a.m., and Varanasi-CSMT Special scheduled to arrive at 2:15 p.m. will be regulated enroute and arrive behind schedule
  • Thiruvananthapuram-LTT Special scheduled to arrive at 4:40 p.m. will be diverted via Pune to arrive behind schedule

According to the Konkan Railway, it has diverted the Ernakulam-Nizamuddin Special and Thiruvananthapuram Central-LTT Special trains, which departed on June 2, via Madgaon Junction-Londa-Miraj-Pune-Manmad route.

The Delhi-Thiruvananthapuram Central Special, which started on June 2, has also been diverted via Surat-Vasai Road-Kalyan-Miraj-Londa-Madgaon route, the Konkan Railway said in a release.

Brace For Cyclone Damage

  • Major damage to thatched houses/huts. Roof tops may blow off. Unattached metal sheets may fly.
  • Damage to power and communication lines.
  • Major damage to kutcha and some damage to pucca roads. Flooding of escape routes.
  • Breaking of tree branches, uprooting of large avenue trees. Large dead limbs blown from trees.
  • Major damage to coastal crops.
  • Damage to embankments/salt pans.

IMD has suggested evacuation of people from low lying areas, judicious regulation of rail and road traffic and advised people in the affected areas to remain indoors, in view of the possible damage the cyclone can cause.

Storm Surge Warning

Storm surge of about 1-2 meters above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low lying areas of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts during the time of landfall, IMD said in its latest update. A storm surge of 0.5-1 meters above the astronomical tide is likely to hit low lying areas of Ratnagiri.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea off Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts on Wednesday.

Rainfall Warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall expected at a few places and extremely heavy falls ( ≥ 20 cm in 24 hours) at isolated places over Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad and north Madhya Maharashtra.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall expected at isolated places over south Konkan (Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts), Goa and south Gujarat region (Valsad, Navsari, Dang, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Surat districts).

Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places over west Madhya Pradesh.
