Coronavirus India Update: Over 60,000 New Cases Reported For The First Time In Five Months

India reported the biggest spike in new Covid-19 infections since October 17 last year, as the second wave prompts local authorities to impose lockdowns to curb the spread.

62,258 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours - taking the total tally to above 1.19 crore, as per the Health Ministry's update as of 8 a.m. on March 27.

This is more than double the 30,386 patients who recovered over the same period, causing the total number of active cases to rise to 4.52 lakh.

Maharashtra Adds Nearly 37,000 New Cases In A Single Day

Authorities in Maharashtra reported nearly 37,000 new cases - the highest ever detected in a single-day. The state reported 36,902 cases as per the health ministry update as of Friday evening. The state continues to contribute to over 50% of the total coronavirus cases being reported across the country.

In view of the rising cases, the state administration has announced the imposition of a night curfew throughout the state, starting March 28.
