China Explosion: Police Conclude Probe, Blame Man Killed in Blast

Multiple explosions rocked a 30-story building in northeast China on Friday, 25 January, killing at least one person.

The blast happened about 3:20 pm on the 30th floor of the Wanda Plaza Apartment Building in Changchun, provincial capital of China's Jilin province, official media reported.

  • Initial reports and videos posted on social media suggest blasts took place within as well as outside the plaza.
  • Wanda Group, which owns the building, said it was aware of the incident but had no comment yet.
  • Investigation into the cause of the blast is ongoing.

Police Say Man Behind Blasts Suffered From Cancer

After concluding its probe into the multiple blasts on Saturday, 26 January, Chinese police said that the assailant, named Guo, suffered from cancer.

A government announcement said Guo had also killed a man with whom he had business disputes in another city before driving to Changchun.

Chinese Police Blame Fatal Blast on Man Killed in Explosion

Chinese police say investigators have concluded an explosion in an apartment building in the country's northeast was set off by a man killed in the blast.

The city government of Changchun said on Saturday on its social media account that the man identified only his surname, Guo, also set off an explosion in the building's underground parking lot.

City Authorities Treating Explosions as 'Criminal Case'

The Changchun city authorities said on Friday, 25 January, that they will be treating the multiple explosions as part of a criminal case.

"Preliminary investigations by public security agencies show that this is a criminal case, work to handle the situation is proceeding in an orderly manner," said the city authorities on their Weibo account.

Visuals Suggest Multiple Blasts Occurred, Both Within and Outside Building Complex

A video clip circulating online, showed a bright beam of light accompanied by a loud bang from a room in a higher floor of the Wanda building, and another explosion and heavy smoke on the ground, with people running for safety.

Another video showed several smaller explosions in front of the building billowing smoke.

Changchun Govt Only Mentions Blast Within Building

The Changchun city government, in a statement released after the blasts, only mentioned explosions that had taken place on the 30th floor of the Wanda Plaza apartment building on Hongqi Street.

"After the incident, provincial leaders immediately ordered rescue work to be carried out. Changchun firefighting department, emergency medical teams, gas companies and electricity companies went to the scene immediately," the statement said.

Heard About 20 Explosions: Eyewitness

An eyewitness, while talking to Beijing Youth Daily, said that about 20 explosions were heard in the city.

Local media also reported that firefighters have urged people not to go near the building, state-run China Global Television Network (CGTN) reported.
