Brazil's Temer Sees Support Fall to Single Digits, Estado Says

(Bloomberg) -- Brazil President Michel Temer’s popularity has fallen into single digits as he fends off corruption allegations and backs unpopular austerity measures, local press reported.

Temer was rated "good" or "very good" by nine percent of respondents, local newspaper Estado de S. Paulo reported, citing an Ibope poll. In the prior Ibope survey carried out in March, the president’s approval rating stood at 20 percent.

A Supreme Court judge last week authorized probes into dozens of senior lawmakers in the latest development of a three-year corruption investigation that has rattled Brazil’s political and business elite. While no probe into Temer was ordered, the investigation has compromised his closest advisers and prompted the president to release a video denying accusations. The allegations are also complicating efforts to pass flagship fiscal measures including an overhaul of the pension system.

Judge Edson Fachin’s decision followed a request by Brazil’s chief public prosecutor, Rodrigo Janot, who sent a list of 108 names to the Supreme Court last month. Much of his evidence was based on plea-bargain testimony from Odebrecht SA executives.

Poll details including the exact survey dates, number of people included and margin of error were not published in the report. Estado de S. Paulo said the poll was concluded "before the Odebrecht plea bargains that named Temer and eight ministers burst on traditional and social media."
