Bolsonaro Moved Out of Semi-Intensive Care as Recovery Continues

(Bloomberg) -- Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has left the semi-intensive care unit of the hospital where he is recovering from surgery, according to a medical report issued on Monday afternoon.

The president was moved to a private room earlier in the day following a steady improvement in his health after intestinal surgery and a bout of pneumonia. In an interview with TV Bandeirantes on Monday Bolsonaro said that he hopes to be released this week. Hospital visits to the president remain restricted.

Brazilian assets dropped on Thursday after the hospital reported that the 63 year-old president showed signs of pneumonia. In his absence, cabinet ministers have been vying for prominence. Vice President Hamilton Mourao has also taken on a much more central role, angering some of Bolsonaro’s supporters. The president has been in hospital since Jan. 28 for follow-up surgery related to injuries sustained in a September knife attack.
