Boko Haram Kills Eight in Attack on Northeast Nigeria Villages

(Bloomberg) -- Boko Haram Islamist militants in Nigeria killed at least eight people when they attacked several villages on the outskirts of the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the country’s emergency agency said.

The armed assailants attacked the villages of Kofa, Mallumti, Ngomari and Gozari after nightfall on Wednesday, leaving six people dead before pursuing fleeing victims to a nearby camp for internally displaced people where they killed another two, Bashir Garga, a spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, said Thursday in an emailed statement.

Boko Haram Islamist militants have waged a violent campaign in Nigeria’s northeast since 2009 to impose its version of Islamic law on Africa’s most populous country of almost 200 million people. Its attacks have left tens of thousands of people dead.
