Biden Says 600 Lawyers Will Guard Against Election ‘Chicanery’

Joe Biden said Wednesday that his campaign had convened a group of 600 lawyers and thousands of volunteers to prepare for any “chicanery” that might disrupt or interfere with the November election.

“We’re continuing to fight any effort to exploit the pandemic for political purposes, support the countless state and local officials working like hell to make voting safe and accessible for citizens, especially the most vulnerable, or call out local rules that don’t adequately ensure access to vote,” Biden said during a fundraiser on Wednesday night.

The Democratic nominee has repeatedly expressed concerns about Donald Trump trying to “steal the election,” as the president has mounted attacks on mail-in ballots, saying without justification that they are rife with fraud and rigged in favor of Democrats.

Trump has escalated his attacks as states have increasingly relied on vote-by-mail because of the coronavirus pandemic and made plans for expanding their use in November.

Biden said his campaign is taking extra steps to ensure the integrity of the election.

“We have over 10,000 people signed up to volunteer,” he said Wednesday. “We’re in the process of getting into the states in question to train them to be in a polling place.”

Justin Clark, Trump’s senior political adviser and senior counsel, disputed Biden’s claims, saying the president is “committed to fair and free elections.”

“Joe Biden is lying and fear-mongering. Democrats are the ones trying to fundamentally change how we vote,” Clark said in a statement. “They are inserting chaos and confusion into our voting process because it is the only way they can win.“
