Bhupendra Patel To Be New Gujarat Chief Minister
Bhupendra Patel, member of Gujarat’s legislative assembly, will be sworn in as the new chief minister of the western state, the news agency ANI quoted Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar as saying.
The legislator from Ghatlodiya assembly seat will succeed Vijay Rupani, a day after the incumbent’s surprise resignation from the top post. The decision was made at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s legislature party meeting at Gandhinagar on Sept. 12.
The chief of the BJP's state unit, CR Patil, later told the media that Patel would take oath on Monday. The changes in the top leadership in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state come a year before it heads to the polls.
Patel was also elected as the new leader of the BJP legislature party, Tomar was quoted as saying by ANI.
Rupani, the former BJP state president, succeeded Anandiben Patel and was sworn in as the chief minister on Aug. 7, 2016.
