Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Tests Positive for Covid, Office Says

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Democratic congresswoman, has tested positive for Covid-19, according to her office.

Ocasio-Cortez, who is fully vaccinated and has had a booster shot, is “experiencing symptoms and recovering at home,” her office said in a statement on Sunday.

Ocasio-Cortez, 32, was embroiled in a social-media war with Republicans over Covid-19 in late December during a trip to Florida with her boyfriend. She was photographed having drinks outside, provoking criticism from many Republicans that she wasn’t abiding by strict pandemic safety rules. New York requires masks indoors, not outside.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has consistently opposed most virus-related restrictions, tweeted a welcome, saying he hoped she was “enjoying a taste of freedom here in the Sunshine State.”

At one point, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted back at a critic that Republicans were projecting their “sexual frustrations.”

New York and Florida, each with different approaches to the virus, have traded places over the last two years as the center of the U.S. outbreak.

New York has been struck harder by the omicron variant, recording among the highest per-capita infections in the U.S., according to data from the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. Florida was hit particularly hard by the earlier delta variant, though it has also reported high levels of cases in the latest surge.
