ACLU Sues Trump Over Border Wall ‘Emergency’ as Lawsuits Pile Up
20 Feb 2019, 07:15 PM IST
(Bloomberg) -- The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration on behalf of the Sierra Club, claiming his plan to circumvent Congress to acquire necessary funding to build a border wall is unconstitutional.
Key Insights
- The suit is at least the fifth such case filed since Feb. 15 when Trump signed the declaration.
- The disputes all question Trump’s authority to bypass Congress, which allocated $1.35 billion to border security in its latest budget. The president could divert up to $8 billion to his promised wall under the emergency action.
- Plaintiffs don’t appear to be in a rush to block Trump’s action, largely because details about how the wall plan will be carried out aren’t clear.
- The case is Sierra Club v. Trump, 19-cv-892, U.S District Court, Northern District of California.
