A Record 49,29,121 Income Tax Returns Filed On Aug. 31 Due Date, Taxman Says

About 5.65 crore income tax returns were filed by taxpayers as on Aug. 31, an increase of 4 percent compared to the previous year, said a statement by Ministry of Finance on Sunday.

The deadline for filing ITRs for Assessment Year 2019-20 was extended by a month to Aug. 31. About 49,29,121 ITRs were filed on Aug. 31, the highest-ever filed on a single day in the world, the statement said. Over 1.47 crore ITRs were filed in the last five days before the due date—an increase of 42 percent from the number of returns filed in the five days to last year’s deadline.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes, the apex body for direct taxes, said that the peak filing rate on Aug. 31 was 196 ITRs per second, 7,447 ITRs per minute and 3.87 lakh ITRs per hour.

Out of the 5.65 crore ITRs filed so far, 3.61 crore have been verified. About 79 percent of the returns were verified electronically using Aadhaar one-time password, the statement said.
