You Can’t Get Either Married or Divorced in N.Y. Right Now

(Bloomberg) -- After weeks of being cooped up together, some New York couples may be ready to either take the plunge or call it quits. Either way, though, they will have to wait.

New York courts stopped taking non-essential filings on March 23, and Lucian Chalfen, a court spokesman, said Friday that category definitely included divorce filings. Chalfen said a person could attempt to ask a judge to consider an emergency divorce filing but said that would likely be “a bit of a stretch.”

The city’s marriage bureau, which issues licenses, has been closed since March 20.

County clerks across the state are only supposed to accept filings in matters like criminal prosecutions, child-protection and very urgent housing cases. Chalfen stressed that anyone who is a victim of domestic violence can seek an immediate order of protection and is advised by the court system to contact their local police department.
