Harvey Weinstein Is Moved From Bellevue Hospital to Rikers Infirmary

(Bloomberg) -- Convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein is being transferred to an infirmary at New York City’s Rikers Island jail after undergoing a medical procedure to clear a heart blockage, his spokesman said.

Weinstein, who had been held under guard at Bellevue Hospital since he was convicted of rape and a criminal sexual act on Feb. 24, is moving to the North Infirmary Command at the jail complex, defense spokesman Juda Engelmayer said in an interview Thursday. The fallen Hollywood power broker was en route to Rikers after the verdict when he complained of chest pain and his ambulance was diverted to the hospital.

Weinstein “underwent a procedure to clear a blockage, and since it’s now resolved, he’s been deemed fit to be sent to Rikers,” Engelmayer said. “He’s being moved as we speak.”

The 67-year-old producer will be housed in the infirmary “under medical watch and not in the general population with other inmates,” Engelmayer said. That’s the facility where defense lawyers asked New York State Supreme Court Justice James Burke to send him after Burke ordered him held by the city’s corrections department after his conviction.

Weinstein was convicted of one count of third-degree rape and one of a criminal sexual act in the first degree. He was acquitted of two counts of predatory sexual assault, which could have resulted in a life sentence, and one of first-degree rape.

After five days of deliberation, the jury found Weinstein guilty of assaulting “Project Runway” assistant Miriam Haley in his SoHo loft in 2006 and raping aspiring actor Jessica Mann in a midtown Manhattan hotel in 2013.

The North Infirmary Command, which can house 416 people, is responsible for the medical care of inmates on Rikers Island.

Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala and a spokesperson for the New York City Correction Department didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.

Weinstein is scheduled to be sentenced on March 11.

The case is People v. Weinstein, 450293/2018, New York State Supreme Court (Manhattan).
