Thai University Tells Students to Stay Home If They Recently Traveled

(Bloomberg) -- One of Thailand’s top universities told students and staff returning from overseas to stay home as fears about the deadly novel coronavirus from China ripple across the country.

They should take a “leave of absence” for two weeks for observation if they have been abroad in the past month or in contact with travelers, Chulalongkorn University said in a statement. That’s especially if trips to or from China are involved, it said.

Thailand -- a popular destination for Chinese tourists -- has 14 confirmed cases of the virus, the highest tally outside the mainland. Officials around the world are striving to stem the spread of the disease, which has killed more than 100 people in China and sickened thousands of others.

The Bangkok-based university, which has about 37,000 students and 8,000 faculty and staff, said it’s acting because there’s now clear evidence that people with the virus have entered the Southeast Asian nation.
