U.S. School Closures Are Easing as Chicago Students Return to Class

School disruptions in the U.S. due to Covid-19 are subsiding after a record number of closures during the first week of January.

At least 3,193 schools have canceled instruction or shifted to remote learning for one or more days this week, down from the peak of 5,376 during the week started Jan. 3, according to Burbio, which tracks school closures.

This week’s projected counts are elevated from tallies released Sunday, but the data still show planned closures moderating through the month.

Most disruptions have been concentrated in the Northeast, as well as Chicago, where schools are set to reopen Wednesday after a labor dispute shuttered schools for five days in the nation’s third-largest district.
