U.S., North Korea to Resume Summit Talks in Week of Feb. 17

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. and North Korean officials will meet in the week starting Feb. 17 to resume discussions on a summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un later this month.

The talks will take place in another unspecified Asian nation as the U.S. and North Korea prepare for the second meeting between their leaders, South Korea’s presidential office said Sunday, confirming an earlier report by Yonhap News. Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will discuss the summit by phone.

U.S. special envoy for North Korea Stephen Biegun traveled to Pyongyang from Feb. 6 to 8 to prepare for the Trump-Kim meeting, which is set to be held on Feb. 27 and 28 in Hanoi, Vietnam. He described his talks in North Korea as productive even though there was “some hard work” left to do.

Trump and Kim met in Singapore last year in a bid to break the impasse over North Korea’s nuclear-arms development. In recent months, North Korea has said it would consider a step-by-step approach, pairing actions to denuclearize with incentives, including the removal of economic sanctions against the country.
