U.K. Reports 881 More Coronavirus Deaths; Total Rises to 7,978

The U.K. reported 881 more deaths from coronavirus on Thursday, taking the overall total to 7,978, as the country struggles to fight the disease.

The latest figure comes as the country is set to extend its lockdown and as scientists look for the peak of the outbreak. The U.K. has recorded fewer total deaths than France, Spain and Italy.

Overall, 65,077 people have tested positive for the disease in the U.K., up from yesterday’s total of 60,733, Foreign Minister Dominic Raab said at a press conference.

The Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine warned on Wednesday that the number of deaths reported each day is an imperfect measure. Many of those deaths may have occurred on previous days, but have only been recorded days later, the Oxford University Center added.

“The current data tentatively suggest a slowing in the rate of deaths and flatlining consistent with hitting a peak,” the research center writes, warning “inaccuracies in the data gives rise to considerable uncertainties.”
