Sweden’s Prime Minister Tested Positive for Covid-19, TT Reports

Sweden’s prime minister, Magdalena Andersson, has tested positive for Covid-19 with a so-called quick test, her press secretary told news agency TT.

The prime minister is feeling well, under the circumstances, the news agency reported. Elsewhere in Swedish politics, Center Party leader Annie Loof and Green Party spokesman Per Bolund both tested positive following a debate of party leaders in parliament earlier this week.

The test result comes just days after Andersson announced new restrictions to curb unprecedented transmission of the virus in Sweden. The Nordic country has registered an average of more than 19,000 cases per day in the past week, which is more than twice as many during the previous peak.

The number of people being treated for Covid-19 in hospitals has almost doubled since the end of 2021, but remains at about 40% of the level it reached in January last year.
