Sweden Bans Meetings of More Than 500 People to Contain Coronavirus

(Bloomberg) --

Sweden’s government will comply with a request from the Public Health Agency to ban gatherings of more than 500 people in an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus in the Nordic nation.

A request for the temporary ban on large public meetings such as at sporting events and concerts was sent to the Swedish government on Wednesday, the health agency said in a statement on its website. The ban, if implemented, wouldn’t last for longer than is deemed necessary to contain the outbreak, it said.

The government will implement the ban as soon as possible, Financial Markets Minister Per Bolund said on Swedish Radio.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Sweden rose to 461 on Wednesday from 326 a day earlier, according to government figures.
