Spartans Lead Big Ten to $38 Million March Madness Haul
(Bloomberg) -- $37.8 million.
That’s how much money, paid out over the next six years, the Big Ten Conference will make off its success so far in this year’s NCAA tournament. It’s the most any league will receive from the NCAA for the 2019 event, followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference.
The money is driven by the success of Big Ten teams, including Michigan State, which will play in the Final Four on Saturday. Purdue reached the Elite Eight; Michigan reached the Sweet 16.
The NCAA has a complex way of rewarding teams for their tournament success. In simple terms, for every tournament game a school plays, not including the championship, the NCAA rewards that team’s conference with about $1.8 million, paid out over six years. After the Final Four, Big Ten teams will have played 21 games. It will be 20 for the ACC and 19 for the SEC.
