Roger Stone Seeks New Trial Less Than a Week Before Sentencing
(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump’s longtime associate Roger Stone filed a sealed request for a new trial less than a week before he’s due to be sentenced for lying to Congress, witness tampering and other crimes.
The Republican operative filed the request Friday in Washington federal court. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson ordered prosecutors to file a sealed response by Feb. 18. Stone is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 20.
It’s the latest twist in a politically charged case that’s already led to the resignation of four federal prosecutors, angry tweets from the president and a rare clash between Trump and his attorney general.
Jackson rejected Stone’s earlier request for a new trial on Feb. 5. At that time Stone claimed that a juror who worked for the Internal Revenue Service was biased against him because the agency sometimes does joint work with the Justice Department.
Bruce Rogow, Stone’s lawyer, didn’t immediately return a call for comment.
The newest filing comes a few days after Stone’s supporters criticized a juror for coming out in support of four prosecutors who resigned from the case after their recommendation for a sentence of seven to nine years was overruled by the Justice Department.
The reversal was widely seen as a result of pressure from Trump, who slammed the prosecutors on Twitter.
