Portugal Says New Virus Cases Rise, Hospitalized Patients Fall

(Bloomberg) --

Portugal reported the highest daily increase in confirmed coronavirus cases since Friday, while the number of patients who were hospitalized fell for the first time this month.

There were 815 new cases in a day, taking the total to 13,956, the government’s Directorate-General of Health said on Thursday. The total number of deaths increased to 409 from 380 reported through Wednesday morning.

  • Deaths so far indicate a fatality rate of 2.9%, while for those more than 70 years old it’s 11%, Secretary of State for Health Antonio Lacerda Sales said at a press conference in Lisbon on Thursday.
  • The number of hospitalized cases fell to 1,173 from 1,211 reported on Wednesday, the first drop in two weeks. Cases in intensive care units fell to 241 from 245.
  • A total of 205 patients have now recovered, up from 196 on Wednesday.

Portugal, which declared a state of emergency on March 18, tightened containment measures further from Thursday through Monday. The government is limiting movement during the Easter holiday weekend by closing airports to all passenger travel and banning movement between municipalities.
