NYC Nears Shelter-in-Place Decision While Cuomo Says Call Is His
(Bloomberg) -- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio insisted a shelter-in-place order was still an option, and a decision would be made within the next 48 hours.
De Blasio said he would coordinate with the state, even after Governor Andrew Cuomo said earlier Tuesday that he alone had the authority to order shelters-in-place, and had no plans to do so for New York City or any other locality.
“Shelter in place, we want to work with the state very carefully on,” de Blasio said. “The city and state should work together to resolve this issue within the next 48 hours. A decision has to be made very soon, and we have to work together to reach a common strategy.”
San Francisco has ordered residents to shelter-in-place, prompting a question to de Blasio of whether he would consider doing so during a Tuesday morning CNN interview.
“It’s quite clear this is a fast-growing crisis,” de Blasio said later at a press conference. “New Yorkers should be prepared right now for the possibility of a shelter-in-place order.”
