Norway Should Prolong Covid Restrictions for Now, Health Body Says

Measures introduced by the government last week should be continued and possibly adjusted to flatten an expected omicron-driven epidemic wave next month and avoid overloading the health service, according to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

“Our assessment is that the situation is still serious,” Line Vold, head of infection control and emergency preparedness, said in a statement on Wednesday. The health system is under strain due to a higher number of patients, greater sick leave among personnel and reduced access to temporary medical workers from abroad.

The omicron variant, which will become dominant in Norway in a few weeks, shows no signs of causing worse symptoms than earlier virus mutations, but is likely to spur a new infection wave from January, the institute said.
