NFL Player’s Jersey Becomes Top Seller After He Reveals He’s Gay
(Bloomberg) -- Sales of Carl Nassib’s jersey surged after the Las Vegas Raiders defensive end became the first active NFL player to come out as gay.
His was the top-selling NFL jersey on Monday and Tuesday through Fanatics Inc., according to a spokesman for the sports-licensing company. Fanatics didn’t specify how many of the products have been sold.
The previously low-profile athlete became the center of attention in the sports world and beyond after he announced on Monday that he’s gay. “I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now, but I’m finally comfortable enough to get it off my chest,” he said in a video posted to Instagram.
The milestone was praised by National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell and others. The NFL announced that it would match Nassib’s $100,000 donation to the Trevor Project, a national organization focused on LGBTQ crisis and suicide prevention efforts.
The jersey sales spike was noted earlier on Twitter by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
