Winter for the Arab Spring – Lessons from a Lost Decade

(Bloomberg) --

Most Arab republics have witnessed popular protests since 2011 and these resulted in the government falling in four countries last year. Will they lead to better states and stable economies? The odds for success are low, according to Bloomberg Economics. Economic development requires inclusive political institutions -- ones that allow plurality while ensuring stability. And of the countries that experienced mass protests in 2011, only Tunisia has transitioned toward inclusiveness. This doesn’t bode well for Iraq and Lebanon, where protests have entered their fourth month.
