Malaysian Opposition Leader Anwar Says King to Verify Lawmakers Supporting Him

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said he presented the country’s king documents proving support from lawmakers to form a new government.

Anwar has the support of more than 120 lawmakers, he told reporters at a briefing after meeting the king earlier Tuesday. The monarch, known as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, will meet party leaders over the next few days, Anwar said.

Anwar last month announced he commanded a “formidable majority” of the nation’s 222 lawmakers to oust Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who took power in March by the thinnest of margins after another coalition government collapsed. The current ruling bloc has said the move will fail.
