Mahathir Posts No-Confidence Vote Speech to His Blog

Malaysia’s former premier Mahathir Mohamad posted the speech he prepared to call a no-confidence vote against the current prime minister, as he doesn’t expect it to come up in parliament.

The government had placed the motion to challenge Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin at the bottom of the list of agenda items twice, Mahathir said in a post to his personal blog.

Muhyiddin, who was appointed by the king to resolve a political turmoil prompted by Mahathir’s abrupt resignation in February, had risen to power without an election. The current leader is backed by a coalition of parties from the former ruling and opposition sides including the United Malays National Organisation, the party of former premier Najib Razak who was ousted in 2018 and then sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption.

Muhyiddin’s appointment “will erode the public’s trust in their ability to form their government of choice through a general election,” Mahathir said. “What’s clear is that the people’s voice no longer has any value in Malaysia. As through the back door, this party that was rejected by the people can become the government.”
