Macron Says Merkel’s Decision Is ‘Respectable’ and ‘Dignified’

(Bloomberg) -- French President Emmanuel Macron said the decision of German Chancellor Angela Merkel not to seek another term as head of her party after 18 years was “respectable” and “dignified,” adding that she’s “always fought for the values of Europe with courage.”

Macron said the rise of right wing parties wasn’t limited to Germany and that the only response was for mainstream parties to avoid “demagoguery” and to listen to the “anger of the people” by providing “answers.”

Asked about the strength of right-wing parties ahead of next May’s European elections, Macron said “It worries me but it motivates me, in line with the combat I’ve always led.”

Macron spoke in Paris at a joint press conference with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
