Lebanon’s Hariri Sees ‘Opportunity’ for Government Breakthrough

Lebanon’s Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri said he would meet with the president again on Monday to discuss the formation of a new government and that he saw an opportunity for a breakthrough after months of stalemate.

“The meeting today was to reduce the conflict and calm things down and I will be honest with you; there is an opportunity that we should take advantage of,” Hariri told reporters after meeting with President Michel Aoun.

Hariri’s comments follow a fiery exchange on Wednesday night that appeared to deepen the political impasse. The incoming premier said his plan for a government of 18 nonpartisan experts was the best way to halt the country’s economic collapse.
