(Bloomberg) -- Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who shut down non-essential businesses in his city two weeks ago and got residents to stay home to contain the coronavirus outbreak, said he’s asking the Trump administration to expand the same measures nationwide.

“This virus is nasty,” he said Sunday in a briefing in Los Angeles. “It will cross borders” and cross states, he said.

The number of new cases in Los Angeles County rose 322 to 2,136 on Sunday, while the number of deaths rose by five to 37, he said. The city’s convention center will be turned into a field hospital in anticipation of a surge in patients.

About 60% of residents said their income streams have been significantly or somewhat reduced as a result of the lockdown, and Washington needs to do more beyond the stimulus package, he said.
