Key Brexit Departments Add 440 Civil Servants in a Year

(Bloomberg) -- The two U.K. government departments at the center of Brexit expanded by more than a quarter over the past year, according to figures published Tuesday.

The number of civil servants at the Department for Exiting the European Union rose by 150 to 560 in the year through September, while the Department for International Trade took on an extra 290 to stand at 1,480, the Office for National Statistics said.

The figures are an indication of the resources being devoted to getting Britain out of the EU at the expense of other departments. However, the course of Brexit remains no clearer than it was at the time of the 2016 referendum after Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday pulled a vote on her deal to avoid a heavy defeat in Parliament.
