Kenya to Focus on Local Tourism to Quicken Post-Virus Recovery

(Bloomberg) -- Kenyan authorities plan to promote domestic and regional travel for two years to accelerate the industry’s recovery from the slump caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“We need not be dependent on international tourism and must start investing heavily in the domestic and regional market,” Tourism Secretary Najib Balala said in an opinion piece published Monday by the Nairobi-based Standard newspaper.

Tourism, the East African nation’s third-biggest foreign-exchange earner after remittances and agricultural exports, received 1.44 million visitors between July last year and February 2020, compared with 1.42 million a year earlier, Balala said.

African nations “must unite and form a federation to promote tourism within the continent” and ease visa restrictions, he said.
