Indonesia Has Record Rise in Covid Cases, Taking Total to 2,738

The number of new coronavirus cases surged by more than 200 for second consecutive day, according to the latest government data, signaling a widening outbreak.

New infections rose by 247 on Tuesday, the biggest daily spike, taking the total to 2,738, Achmad Yurianto, spokesman for the government task force, said at a televised news conference in Jakarta.

The deadly virus may infect as many as 95,000 people by May before easing, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said on Monday and authorities have ordered people to wear face masks to contain the pandemic.

Southeast Asia’s largest economy has seen a surge in infections in recent weeks with the death toll reaching 221, making it the highest in Asia after China.
