Hong Kong Gyms Popular With Bankers Cleaned After Virus Case

(Bloomberg) --

Two coronavirus patients visited gyms near the heart of Hong Kong’s central business district, adding to concern about a recent uptick in cases in the Asian financial hub.

Pure Fitness gyms at ICBC Tower, Kinwick Centre and California Tower were disinfected after one of the members was found to have visited the locations from March 11 to March 16, the fitness chain said in a notice on Thursday. Separately, a Hong Kong Department of Health official said two virus patients had visited one of the locations. Pure said all three gyms are now safe to use and it will continue screening members for fever.

While Hong Kong moved more quickly to contain the outbreak than some other cities, it now has 208 confirmed cases, including 9 from the stricken Diamond Princess cruise ship. That’s more than double the level two weeks ago.

On Tuesday, the Hong Kong government said it was extending mandatory 14-day quarantines for all visitors arriving from outside of Greater China. It also reiterated that city residents should avoid traveling and said it would keep some schools shut beyond an original April 20 deadline. The quarantine measures took effect on Thursday.
