Greggs Moves to Ensure Post-Brexit Supply of Vegan Sausage Rolls

(Bloomberg) -- Greggs Plc says it’s taking steps to ensure that its hot-selling new vegan sausage roll won’t be affected by the U.K.’s plans to leave the European Union -- at least not for the first few weeks.

The sandwich chain has been stockpiling ingredients for the roll as the March 29 Brexit date nears, Chief Executive Officer Roger Whiteside said in a phone interview. Securing supplies for salads will be tougher, because much of the U.K.’s fresh produce is imported.

“We’ve had to come up with contingency plans about what happens if you run short of lettuce and tomatoes,” Whiteside said. “People will buy other things in their place, but obviously we’d rather not have to cope with that and the disruption that would bring.”

Production of the vegan sausage roll, which was introduced in January and is already among the bakery chain’s top five best-selling products, should continue because the ingredients aren’t as fresh as those in salads, according to Whiteside.
