GM Strike Talks Hit Speed Bump Over Job Security Guarantees

(Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co. and the United Auto Workers remain deadlocked over job guarantees, according to a letter sent out on Tuesday by union Vice President Terry Dittes.

Talks broke down on Oct. 6 after GM made a proposal that Dittes said did not offer enough security for workers. The union wants investment in U.S. plants to guarantee long-term work for UAW members.

“On day 23 of our strike, this still remains as one of our top agenda items with little progress to report,” Dittes wrote. “Economic gains in this agreement will mean nothing without job security.“

GM announced last year it won’t allocate future product to plants in Maryland, Michigan and Ohio. One of those factories, bordering Detroit and the town of Hamtramck, is poised to be out of work in January. The automaker has offered to start building an electric pickup truck at the plant, but that would have to be agreed in a new labor contract.
