German State Premier to Step Down After Nationwide Outrage, DPA Reports

(Bloomberg) -- The new premier of the German state of Thuringia will resign as his party seeks a new election in response to a political crisis that’s engulfed Germany, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported.

Thomas Kemmerich was installed with the backing of the far right as well as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union on Wednesday, sparking nationwide outrage.

Merkel earlier in the day called the state CDU’s decision to align itself with the far-right Alternative for Germany to elect Kemmerich “unforgivable.”

Kemmerich is due to make a public statement at about 2 p.m. German time.
