French Minister Urges ‘Yellow Vest’ Protesters to Respect Rules

(Bloomberg) -- French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner called on protesters planning further demonstrations this Saturday against fuel tax rises to alert police to guarantee safety in the wake of “unacceptable violence” in the French capital last weekend.

Authorities have so far received two notifications relating to Dec. 1, the minister said in a statement Thursday. Neither related to Paris’ Champs-Elysees avenue, where some protesters set fires and ripped up cobblestones to throw at police last Saturday.

Castaner has said members of far-right political movements were among those who confronted police during demonstrations organized by the “gilets jaunes” protesters, who oppose President Emmanuel Macron’s fuel tax policies. Recent polls meanwhile show public support for the movement is growing.
