Former U.S. Prosecutor Berger Set to Head SEC's New York Office

(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has named Marc Berger, a former federal prosecutor who led high-profile probes of insider-trading probes, to head its New York regional office.

Berger, who has been in private practice since leaving the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York in 2014, will join the SEC in January, the agency said in a statement on Monday. During his time at SDNY, he supervised prosecutions as head of the office’s securities and commodities fraud task force, the SEC said.

“Marc has served with great distinction as a supervisor and prosecutor of securities and other white-collar matters,” said Steven Peikin, co-director of the SEC’s enforcement unit. “He is well-known in the SEC’s New York office and throughout the securities bar as a strong and effective leader who has a keen mind and sound judgment.”

Berger will join the SEC from Ropes & Gray, where he is global co-head of securities and futures enforcement practice. He will take the helm of an office with a staff of nearly 400 lawyers, accountants and examiners responsible for overseeing the largest concentration of SEC-registered financial firms.
