Florida's CFO Has Eyes on Amazon Rebound After Break Up With NYC
(Bloomberg) -- Florida’s Chief Financial Officer was quick to jump on Twitter Thursday, after Amazon.com Inc. scrapped its plan for a headquarters in New York City, reminding the company about the state’s tax policies and good weather.
“We invite Amazon to learn what NYers already know: FL living is better!” Jimmy Patronis tweeted, just minutes after Amazon’s announcement, despite the company stating that it won’t be re-opening the search for an alternative location.
Before Amazon settled on Long Island City in Queens and Crystal City for its new digs in Virginia, Miami-Dade in South Florida had been on the shortlist. The city’s County Mayor Carlos Gimenez had made a pitch highlighting over $3 billion in infrastructure spending over the past decade.
Florida is not be the only state hoping for a second chance. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy reached out to Amazon Thursday urging them to reconsider Newark as a headquarters location. “New Jersey is open for business, and now more than ever, Newark is the clear choice as the next presence for Amazon corporate offices. Amazon now has the opportunity to join in Newark’s story of a city on the rise,” he said in a statement.
