Ethiopia Lifts State of Emergency on Diminishing Security Threat

Ethiopia’s council of ministers lifted a state of emergency in the Horn of Africa nation on Wednesday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Abiy’s office said.

“The situation that led to the declaration of an emergency has changed, and the threat is now at a level that can be countered by formal law enforcement action, so it became necessary to shorten the state of emergency,” according to an emailed statement.

The state of emergency was declared in November and was intended to be in place for six months amid fighting between Ethiopia’s federal army and the dissident Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
