Dubai Locks Down Historic Neighborhood to Prevent Virus Spread

(Bloomberg) --

Dubai locked down one of the city’s densely populated areas that’s home to the gold souk and museums in efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

No one will be allowed to leave or enter Al Ras for two weeks from Tuesday, state-run WAM reported. There will be heightened restrictions on the movement of people and traffic to facilitate sterilization of the area.

This is the first zone to be put on full lockdown in the Middle East business hub because of the virus. The United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is a part, has restricted the movement of people between 8pm and 6am until April 5.

The Gulf nation has reported 611 virus cases, including five deaths.
