Coronavirus Can Still Be Contained in Most of Africa, WHO Says

Much of the African continent still has a chance to contain the coronavirus pandemic, according to the World Health Organization.

More than 30 others nations can still prevent a larger outbreak by testing, contact tracing and isolating patients, said Michel Yao, the WHO’s emergency operations program manager. So far, only a few African countries are experiencing a rapid increase in local transmissions, he said.

Africa has recorded 10,692 cases across 54 nations since the first infected person was identified in February. That includes 535 deaths, data compiled by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention show. At least 10 nations have imposed full or partial lockdowns and almost all have closed their air and land borders.
