Consumers to the Rescue as East Europe's Exports Weaken

Consumers bolstered by government handouts and rising wages helped salvage growth last quarter in the largest eastern European economies. The help was timely as net exports either contributed nothing or were a drag on expansion in Poland and Hungary. The question now is whether domestic demand is enough to insure against the slowdown taking place globally.
