Can't Wait for 5G? China Already Targeting Preparations for 6G

(Bloomberg) -- While the world’s largest wireless network operators are putting 5G technology in place, Chinese researchers are setting targets for the next generation of wireless services, according to state media.

China is expected to formally start research and development of 6th generation wireless systems in 2020, the Securities Times newspaper said Tuesday, citing Su Xin, team leader of a 5G working group under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In addition to expanding coverage to higher altitudes, 6G will offer transmission speeds more than 10 times faster than 5G, according to Su.

The world’s most populous country is trying to secure an edge over the U.S. and other countries in establishing high-speed networks, including in the race to deploy 5G systems.
