Cameroon, Togo Report First Confirmed Cases of Coronavirus

Cameroon Reports French Citizen as First Case of Coronavirus

Cameroon and Togo reported their first cases of coronavirus on Friday, raising the number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa with confirmed incidents to five.

In Cameroon, a 58-year-old French national and a local woman who the person had close contact with tested positive, the government said in separate statements on Friday. The French citizen, who arrived in the capital on Feb. 24, and the woman are receiving treatment at the Central Hospital of Yaounde.

In Togo, a 42-year-old woman, who is a national of the West African country, tested positive after traveling to Germany, France, Turkey and Benin, the government said in a statement. She arrived back in Togo on March 2 after starting her travels on Feb. 22.

The other sub-Saharan African countries with confirmed cases are Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa. Globally, the number of confirmed cases is over 100,000, with more than 3,400 people having died.
