Brazil’s Defense Minister Resigns in Surprise Move
(Bloomberg) -- Brazil’s Defense Minister Fernando Azevedo e Silva is stepping down, a surprise move that marks the second change in President Jair Bolsonaro’s cabinet within hours.
In a brief letter, Azevedo thanked the president for the opportunity to serve and said he leaves “knowing the mission was accomplished.” The statement, sent by the ministry’s press office, doesn’t mention a reason for his resignation.
The unexpected departure comes on the same day that Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo tendered his resignation after pressure from lawmakers over the country’s failed strategy to acquire vaccines and contain the pandemic.
