Bloomberg News, Washington Post Join One Free Press Coalition

(Bloomberg) -- Over a dozen news outlets, including Bloomberg News, BuzzFeed and the Washington Post, have joined a coalition that’s raising awareness about press freedom worldwide.

Insider Inc., Quartz and Wired also are joining the One Free Press Coalition, which was created in March to cast a collective media spotlight on unresolved cases of injustice and violence against journalists. The Associated Press, Reuters and the Financial Times were already part of the advocacy group.

On Wednesday, the coalition issued its third monthly “10 Most Urgent” list highlighting cases of journalists who have been killed or put in peril. That includes Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who have been jailed for over 500 days in Myanmar after revealing a massacre of 10 Muslim Rohingya men by Buddhist villagers and Myanmar security forces. The Myanmar Supreme Court recently upheld their convictions.

The list also includes former Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed in October at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul. Khashoggi had written critically about Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

Other cases on the coalition’s list: a Tanzanian journalist who went missing after investigating mysterious killings, as well as journalists in Nicaragua who were detained after a crackdown on local media.

The same outlets also joined the Washington Post’s Press Freedom partnership, which shares a similar mission of promoting press freedoms.
