Blockchain Startup Securitize Hires Former SEC Official Brett Redfearn

Brett Redfearn, a former Securities and Exchange Commission official and Coinbase Global Inc. executive, has joined the blockchain trading startup Securitize Inc.

Redfearn will serve as a strategic adviser to Chief Executive Officer Carlos Domingo. Redfearn recently left Coinbase, where he led the cryptocurrency exchange’s capital markets group, and has previously worked at JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Scrutiny of cryptocurrencies is rising in Washington as regulators and lawmakers seek to crack down on the sector. Redfearn will benefit the company “tremendously,” as it grows “within the existing U.S. regulatory framework,” Domingo said in a statement.

Securitize Inc., which is developing a blockchain platform for investors to trade shares in closely held companies and other assets, gathered $48 million in a fundraising round earlier this year co-led by Morgan Stanley and Blockchain Capital.

Redfearn previously ran the SEC’s markets and trading division, which oversees U.S. stock markets and Wall Street brokerages. Before that, he was head of market structure at JPMorgan.
